I received the large size after measuring my calves. I had to take a medium size. I tried on the large Ariat halves and they were very narrow, but these seem larger. We'll see how they feel as I ride - update - went to put them to ride and the stitching came apart, see my 3rd photo

They are big. I measured the widest part of my calf at 17 inches and according to the chart I ordered XL (16 to 18 inches stretched) but when I received them they were loose especially in the calf area. The 1/2 chaps were meant to be snug, especially when first putting them on, but they arched loosely around my calf. Otherwise the quality, the leather and the stitching were good and I took the next smaller size back.

Exactly what I was looking for. Looks good although some edges are a bit rough. My shin measurement is exactly 17" with jeans so I ordered a size XL. The fit is good, not too loose but there is some room to stretch and they stay upright. I wish the zipper was metal instead of plastic but time will tell tell me how they hold up I will wear them on my motorbike if I don't want to wear expensive tall boots the brown color goes almost perfectly with my cordovan ankle boots.
