great improvement for your camera

excellent flash. It works great with both of my cameras and you can even control custom flash functions from the camera menu. I have a 430EX II and this flash and really like the Metz user interface and menu structure. Works great as a master or with the latest firmware update, it even works with the EOS 7D's built-in flash trigger. The only thing I miss is the quick release shutter that you find on Canon II flashes and it would be nice if it was also as eco-friendly as the 580 EX II.

Pros
  • delivery was very fast

In the beginning I liked it best in Blitzen

I bought it instead of 580 exI because I know that many professionals have problems with 580s. I had a great exposure and the Metz 58 worked well and I was very happy with my decision. Fast forward: I ran into a few issues. I'm not complaining, I know I tested my gear and used it to the best of my ability, but I was babysitting this device and it died a bit early. I bought this flash to replace my Canon 550Ex which sometimes underexposed many of my photos by about 1 stop or more. My first impression of this flash was that it was much smaller, lighter and thinner than my 550EX. I'm a big fan of "lightweight" hardware, but for $359 I was expecting a much more reliable flash. One of the main reasons I bought this flash was the 'Auto' mode which the…

Metz quality but poor product planning.

I bought this flash to replace a troubled Canon 580EX flash. Metz has been making flashes since at least the 1950's and is widely recognized as a name for quality photographic lighting. At some point in the past Bogen (famous for their tripods) took over Metz, nowadays their reputation is not quite the same and after this experience I know why. Canon, like other manufacturers, does not release hardware protocol specifications for use in other products and therefore flashes or other third party…
