Review on Metz MZ 58311C 58 AF-1C: High-performance Flash for Canon Cameras by Tony Flugence

Revainrating 2 out of 5

In the beginning I liked it best in Blitzen

I bought it instead of 580 exI because I know that many professionals have problems with 580s. I had a great exposure and the Metz 58 worked well and I was very happy with my decision. Fast forward: I ran into a few issues. I'm not complaining, I know I tested my gear and used it to the best of my ability, but I was babysitting this device and it died a bit early. I've had it for 2 years and have been repaired 3 times. It happens and I can accept it. But the conversion took a long time. Last time it took almost 2 months to get it back. For 24 months he spent 5 months in repairs. As a professional, I can't rely on that. I bought a 580 EXII and now use Metz as a backup. The menu is a bit complicated but you get used to it. The biggest problem I have is that I can't ask an assistant to set the power because it's easier to do it yourself. The exposures are amazing. She definitely does her job well. The features are great too: it has an extra flash, which is a nice addition. The ability to update the firmware is great. Finally, I need to ensure that the device can be repaired and returned in a reasonable amount of time. I know it's going to end in trouble, but there seems to be a lot going on. In case you're wondering, I've only used it on AA batteries, with no external batteries, and I haven't run the device or overheated.

Pros
  • Very good price
Cons
  • Long delivery time
