This chain is for making legal stainless steel jewelry. I used to work for a large scrap and ferrous recycling company and gained a lot of knowledge about non-ferrous and ferrous metals. Out of habit, I checked this chain with a magnet and it wasn't sticking, so it turned out to be real stainless steel. Forget the crappy craft stores, I had to bring out my big guns (aka really bulky electrician's wire cutters) for this chain! It's so strong that it won't tear even if you cut it, but won't straighten it no matter how much muscle I use. The only downside is that the adapter rings that come with it won't fit the links when sandwiched between two other links, the links are too small for that, but if you cut them off and connect them with a snap, the rings work fine. I bought this over 4 months ago to use as a charm necklace that I already had. I used sterling silver rings and a lobster clasp. I wear it almost every day.
