Nikon D5000 is an amateur medicine.

I recently bought a Nikon D5000 (June 6th 2010) and have already taken over 500 pictures with it. I've been using the Canon Rebel XTi for many years (the last two) and all with great disappointment. It's not that Canon made a bad product, it's just that this model was not up to Canon standards and was plagued with exposure issues. These issues have been verified on numerous forums. Now imagine the Nikon D5000 and Ashton Kutcher in a Nikon runway commercial. I was immediately impressed with the…

Pros
  • 12.3 megapixel DX format CMOS sensor
Cons
  • Legacy model

The D5k did not disappoint

Have been using the D5000 for 2 months now. Two areas that impress me the most are exposure accuracy and backwards compatibility. I like the control over the exposure settings, although menu navigation is sometimes tricky outdoors in sub-zero temperatures with gloves on. Got 18-55 and 55-200 VR straight away, they work well for relatively slow lenses in reasonable light but that's not where the magic images are for me. Too often, the lag when using autofocus slows me down, gives up, or worse…

Pros
  • Taking pictures on SD/SDHC memory cards (not included)
Cons
  • Slightly torn

The Nikon D5000 is a great camera for learning to take photos!

I received the Nikon D5000 - VERY FAST - from Revain.com and got to work straight away. I knew NOTHING (and I mean NOTHING) about photography (f-numbers, f-stop size and shutter speed didn't tell me anything 4 weeks ago) but thanks to the excellent documentation that comes with the D5000 (along with lots of great web tutorials) I did able to have meaningful conversations with much more experienced photographers within the first week. Shooting indoors is difficult at first (because it's all…

Pros
  • D-Movie mode with sound; Recording HD 720p Movies
Cons
  • Useless Features

price reflects professional images

I've had a D5000 since June 2010 (a year at the time of writing). Colleagues and fellow photographers were amazed at the quality of the images captured with this camera. I'll spare you the technical discussion and tell you the advantages and disadvantages as I see them. I consider myself a professional layman, professional graphic designer if you will (magazine and print design) who knows how good images influence my work. Quality, but not the budget of professional devices - maybe you too, if…
