Disappointing Recording Quality

As my tests showed, this digital voice recorder failed to capture clear audio with consistent levels, resulting in frustratingly unintelligible playback.

Pros
  • Sleek design and easy-to-use interface.
Cons
  • Inconsistent recording quality that renders the device unreliable for important meetings or interviews.

Great product with big bug

For professional reasons I sometimes have to record interviews and lectures. I already had an Olympus DM-520 (an excellent product) and settled on this DM-420 which is essentially the same but has half the recording capacity. If you need to record important interviews, lectures, etc., it's better to use 2 voice recorders at the same time to have a backup just in case: double recording is much cheaper than possible data loss. The reason for choosing the DM-420 over another DM-520 was the colour:

Pros
  • Memory 2GB and Micro SD compatibility
Cons
  • Fade

High quality recordings, many hidden features.

I needed this primarily for recording personal coaching sessions both in person and over the phone. I needed a stereo tape recorder that could store files in generic formats like WMA or MP3, and I needed one that could run on both external power and batteries. It is one of the very few recorders that meet these requirements. At first I was disappointed that by default you can't record while it's plugged into a power source. The default configuration assumes that you are actually transferring…

Pros
  • MP3 and WMA recording
Cons
  • Available in white only
