OK, but not quite there.

I like the size and it fits comfortably in my breast pocket. When I want to transcribe notes in class, I prefer headphones for private listening so I can work in the library. This device has a connector, but it requires a micro connector, which is not found on regular headphones. The adapter is also difficult to find. Minicassettes are easy to find at office supply stores, and headphone jacks are almost impossible to find.

Pros
  • Built-in dynamic speaker for crystal clear sound; does not include a blank microcassette (as stated on packaging)
Cons
  • Available in white only

Falls apart after little use

I bought this tape recorder in 2003 and hardly used it. I dropped it once and it fell apart completely rendering it unusable. I expected a portable device to be able to absorb normal shock and wear and tear, but this voice recorder was rendered useless after a minor accident - it slipped out of my hand and landed on my desk. The only reason I'm revisiting this site is to verify the product name and model so I don't buy it (or any other tape player in the range) again. Really bad product.

Pros
  • Tape counter for easy retrieval of previously recorded passages
Cons
  • Piggy bank price

J500 with fewer features.

Good recorder but you may need a J500 instead. This recorder is a stripped down version of the Pearlcorder J500. It lacks an index marker, a three-light battery status indicator, and the buttons for record, play, etc. lack a gold metal overlay. It's still a good recorder and is great if you don't need other features. As far as I know the J500 and J300 were intended to replace the old Pearlcorder L200 and L400 but these two recorders cannot provide the same analogue microcassette recorder…

Pros
  • Double the tape speed gives up to three hours of recording time on a 90 minute tape.
Cons
  • Expensive
