I suspect that after one of my kids fiddled with the back of the remote constantly, the latches/snaps eventually wore out leaving the back of the remote barely secure. If you drop the remote from the couch onto the floor, the backrest will fly away and then start searching for the remote. I don't know how many times I've dropped remotes on the floor only to see them break. They then become tape monster remotes held together with duct tape, duct tape, or some other type that keeps the color and somehow matches it.
