The small version is intended for small people. If you're a big retired marine, don't buy this. Excellent backpack for a child I do not dispute. This backpack is bigger than you think, I was surprised how much I could fit in. I conveniently placed 8 water bottles, 3 Army MRESs (ready to eat), some beef jerky and a couple of snack M&Ms. An arsonist, of course, a flashlight and a few smaller bags for my wallet and cell phone. This is a really good "assault backpack" if you buy it for military purposes. It's also the perfect size for day trips or just to pack a few spares you might need when taking the kids out for the day.
