Major issues with San Disk 8GB Compact Flash and Canon DSLR

As a professional photographer, I have used San Disk Compact Flash exclusively for many years. The 1, 2 and 4GB San Disks have worked flawlessly with my Canon DSLRs for about 5 years. However, I am NOT happy with the 8GB (30MB/s) model. I recently bought five for a European photoshoot. The 8GB model does not consistently take photos on my Canon 7D camera. Especially when I'm doing a series of 5-6 shots. None of the images are recorded and I have to remove and reinsert the card to start…

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Some difficulties

Great DSLR memory card!

When I was planning to buy a Canon 7D with HD video capability, I figured I'd need a fast CF memory card to keep up. Not correct. This 30MB/s card is more than enough. Why pay so much more for an Extreme CF card when you can buy an Ultra card. Please don't be embarrassed as I was initially confused by Sandisk's confusing move to upgrade Ultra-II to Ultra. Ultra II cards are much slower. So make sure you only get the Ultra name and see if it says 30MB/s. I also like to buy the retail version so…

SanDisk & GR 20 Trail, Corsica

On October 8th this year I hiked the GR 20 trail in Corisca, France, known as the toughest hike in Europe. On this hike I fell on the rocks, the camera flew, bounced off a ledge or two and ended up in a submerged stream. When I retrieved the camera and lens, I found the Sandisk memory card underwater about 8 feet away. I dried the card, put it in my pocket, put it in a bag of rice in Paris and then bought a card reader and lo and behold I found all my photos, never lost one. I uploaded 5 memory

Compact flash card for computer accessories and peripherals

Arrived fairly quickly, which is nice. I don't like that I paid shipping tax to UPS and UPS mailed it (cheaper). I checked the San Disk site before ordering these and they offered this (no faster cards) for my camera. When using a converted SDHC card, I found that I could use a faster CF card. But you want to be safe and not constantly bust. In any case, it's up to 15MB or a rating of 200 (on the box and on the website). It writes fast enough for slow recordings. Now consider that I shoot in…

Works as expected: CompactFlash cards

I almost always buy SanDisk cards for my digital camera. As a professional photographer I want something that is reliable and have used this SanDisk 8GB card a number of times since purchasing it. It has worked reliably every time. I trust SanDisk to make quality memory cards. I mainly use it in my Canon 7d camera and the only downside is that I run out of space too quickly when shooting videos. This is normal as the price of these cards compares favorably to the cost of losing a job. Addendum:

  • Fun
Cons
  • Security

Act! A must for a digital photographer!

This 8GB CF card allows me to take over 400 RAW photos or over a thousand FINE JPEG files with my Nikon D200. One or two of these are even enough for vacations, largely eliminating the need to take a laptop with you to dispose of CF cards on all but the longest or most photo-heavy vacations. One of these is always enough for a one-day shoot, although I will take two with me just in case. The speed of this card is sufficient for all my needs and generally allows continuous shooting without much…

Huge, Fast, and Reliable

I love my Sandisk cards. I also have a 4.0GB Sandisk Extreme card and made an interesting comparison. Here in my living room I'm racing the recording time between Ultra and Extreme. When writing a large buffer filled with photos, the capture time was the same on multiple attempts. The more expensive Extreme was no faster than this card. In my case, the writing speed has to be limited by my Nikon 8800 camera. A reliable card up to 8.0 GB is very useful. My cards have traveled through Alaska…

Quality control goes downhill

I've been using Sandisk cards for a long time. A while back I bought a Kingston card and found that it is not as fast and reliable as Sandisk cards. I've been using them for 8 years now and have been very happy with them until recently. I have about 500GB of digital media for my business, almost all of these sandisks, and a choice of SD and CF cards from 2GB to 32GB. The problem lies with these 8 GB cards. I'm not sure what's up with them, but for some reason most of the 8GB cards I've bought…

High performance, high speed, maximum flexibility.

I've been using this card in my camera since early May and have been blown away by the flexibility its speed and capacity offers. Try as I might, the closest I got to filling this card was on my Canon XTi on a 5 day trip where I took over 3,000 medium/high quality (2816 x 1880) shots. I didn't have a computer or other storage with me on the trip, so I expected that at some point I'd have to delete photos to be able to save everything and be able to shoot more of what I wanted. But on the third…
