Should be perfectly aligned to allow hands to move freely and point in the right direction. It tends to get stuck, which can be confusing to use.

For the money this is a really good compass. Highly legible in muddy water and glows in dark water. The bezel has a very clear Lubberline marking. If the compass is not level, the dial will lock.

Scrap, cheap copy of other compasses that look similar but the magnet is too weak and/or the axis has too much friction, the compass card just spins everywhere, where the dial is pointed. The only way to get it working is if it's standing on a hard surface and not moving, even then you sometimes have to tap it a few times to make it point north.

I ordered one like this. The rotating bezel was missing when I received it so it just fell apart and was unusable. So I ordered another one. The second also had no bezel and was completely unusable. I ordered a different brand from a different supplier and got what I needed. I think there are probably thousands of these devices for sale that don't have a bezel. Beware. DO NOT BUY THIS

Bought to use for the PADI advanced certification Navigation option but it doesn't hold true north so the course jumps all over the dial making navigation useless and having to rely only on visual cues . I gave up completely and returned to Revain for a refund.

Good diving compass for the price. I bought one just like this at a dive shop near me and paid twice as much. I use it as a backup for my depth gauge hose. I'm self taught in underwater navigation and have used it to walk a few hundred yards in a quarry and it worked great when I taught myself. I got exactly where I wanted to be. Don't pay at retail like I did the first time!

This compass points north, but only when held very still and level (a bit tricky under water). A slight tilt of the wrist can cause the hand to move up to 90 degrees. This can be quite confusing underwater (as I quickly learned). I had to check the course with my buddy before I was sure we were going in the right direction.
