My cat lays on it before using it but if she were a more playful kitty she might knock it over. This item is more like a cat scratch mat pinned to a curved board, the mat itself is crooked on a thin board, but if my cat doesn't mind, neither will I. I love that I can mount it anywhere, usually with a wall on one side to keep it stable and out of the way. No maintenance, no hardware, just take it out of the plastic and put it back in. I have to say I'm very disappointed with this scratching post. Looking at the product page, it looks perfect for my cat who, to my great dismay, likes to dig her claws into my carpet. I have that vertical scratching post that everyone has, but it's on the side of my apartment so it's out of the way, and he doesn't go there often just to scratch it. He would have preferred something more immediate, so I thought that would be perfect. It turns out to be much smaller than it appears in the photos.
