Affordable Wireless

I received this card yesterday. I also bought a smc7004vwbr wireless router. I connected the router to my cable modem and installed the router app on my desktop computer (WinXP Home Edition). I connected my desktop to my router with an adjustable Cat5 cable. I then plugged the SMC2635W into my laptop (Windows2000 Professional) and installed the driver. Magic. I'm online from every desktop and laptop at the same time. The DHCP part of the router worked fine. And I was able to connect to myโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Site Survey Utility
Cons
  • Long Time

Short range and unstable

This card is easy to install. Works great with WinXP on my Dell Inspiron 2560. However, it has poorer range/reception compared to the Belkin card I previously had. It disconnects quite often at 50 feet away with a wall between them. The included software utility showed 95% 100% signal strength and connection quality at this point. The reading immediately drops to 0%, I've hardly seen any other percentage between 0% and 95%. From time to time I lose connection in a very short distance of lessโ€ฆ

Pros
  • High transmission power up to 100 mW (20 dBm)
Cons
  • I don't really like it, everything is fine

Doesn't work on new HP laptops

Works fine on my old WinMe laptop but not on my new HP ZE4420US. See this link: [website] Email support was not very helpful. The card shows that it is communicating with my router, but the TCP/IP connection hangs after getting the TCP address via DHCP. Struggled with this for a week then returned the laptop and they put a Linksys 802.11b card in and it worked like a charm.

Pros
  • 802.11b Wi-Fi certified with high data rates up to 11Mbps
Cons

Absolutely useless for computers and accessories

This is the most sophisticated 802.11b card I've seen; A few minutes after plugging it in, it disconnects for no apparent reason. The client software is terrible. Changing a parameter causes the security keys to be forgotten (I've entered my security key so many times that I've remembered all of its 32 hexadecimal digits). It sometimes insists on making a special connection to other computers in the area, even if it's only set to "Infrastructure".

Pros
  • Ability to select different countries and available channels in each regulatory area
Cons
  • Mostly fine, but...
