Thick, durable and well made cable!

Excellent cable, very fast and well made. Extremely durable when pulled through walls and ducts and tacked to joists, floorboards etc. This cable is quite thick, so keep that in mind when planning routes. Probably 2-3 times thicker than some of those old Category 5e cables, but since it's shielded it's better suited to running inside an already built house and you have limited options as to where to run your network cable. B. near power lines, gas lines, etc. :).

Pros
  • Useful not only for the intended purpose
Cons
  • Many things

Expect a little extra work/expense, but very strong connectors.

. I haven't tested the speed at the moment, so I can't answer these questions. My main reason for this review is to let you know which keystone jacks and terminators I used. I used Cable Matters Shielded Model 180014 Keystone Connectors and Shielded Plugs Model 180086. Both connectors are sturdy but much appreciated after I *tried* to use Lowe's plastic Cat 6 connectors (I couldn't find 6a) (they don't work so don't try). They take longer to apply and are definitely more voluminous, but I would

Product specs need updating

Very strong wire but a few key details are missing from the product description. Individual wires are 23 AWG in diameter but with heavier than normal insulation, wire sizes range from 52 to 55/1000 inch (1.32 to 1.39mm) od. This means you CANNOT use regular CAT6A terminators. I had to order these - https://www.amazon.com/VCE-Shielded-Modular-Stranded-Ethernet/dp/B07L8QKHZQ Also on wire pairs the white wire is ALL white, there is NO color bar.

You will need special terminators

So first the pros - This is a solid product for running very well shielded, heavy insulated cable in the wall, I have no doubt it will not have any transition problems . or interference running through the house. Now the cons. I learned this the hard way. It says it's a 23AWG hardcore. Trust me, it fits almost no 23AWG terminator. Well why because of that extra insulation around the fixed core pairs. You have to find 22AWG terminators if you don't just want endless hours of frustration. I wasโ€ฆ

High quality CAT6A cable

I bought this cable to run through all the rooms of a new house under construction. I have gigabit speed switches, NICs and routers and can say that when transferring files over the network this cable performs at full gigabit speed if not better than using a Cat5e cable (10Gb I have yet to test ). ** Pay attention to this. The cable is thick, so you need CAT6A RJ-45 plugs with CAT6A termination blocks. I bought these shielded RJ-45 connectors that work great with this cableโ€ฆ

Good shielding

I've used up about half my roll so far. Right now I'm only using it for gigabit, but it's running at full speed as I've tested the cable speed with iperf and it's very close to the expected maximum of the cable. The difference between the max and what I got was due to my computer/NIC hardware and driver as another shorter shop had bought 6a cables which were the exact same speed. When it comes to shielding, I have a combined cable tester and cable tracker. I plug one of these two devices intoโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Hands-free device
Cons
  • Very expensive

Although I don't have a 10 Gigabit network switch, I wanted to make sure I had the best possible backbone to my router to protect my network in the future. I pulled out the Cat6 patch (see photo) and ran this one instead. Each pair of wires is foil shielded and all pairs are wrapped in a ground braid. As with Cat6, each individual wire is 23 AWG, but the insulation in this CAT6A is much thicker, making it almost impossible to connect each wire to a standard pass-through connector. In order toโ€ฆ

Be prepared for some extra work/expense but very durable connectors
