Sony MDR-EX71SL Fontopia In-Ear Headphones

So I bought the Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia In-Ear Headphones (white) because of the price and the sound quality. I'm a musician, so sound quality is important. I was very happy with my Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia in-ear headphones. Then one day the price went from $12-15 to $55! I was shocked, so I decided to try the Sony MDR-EX71SL Fontopia In-The-Ear In-Ear Headphones (Black). I was very impressed with the sound. Good deep bass and good highs. Averages aren't that bad. Adjusting the equalizer on…

Great product just got better.

I already have my third pair of these (the previous two didn't disappoint, I just wanted more for different uses). The sound quality is EXCELLENT, they are comfortable all day long. They also go in and out of your ears very quickly and easily. People complain about the short cord, but it's perfect if you're using the device in a shirt pocket or on a bracelet, a very clean setup without a bunch of cords snagging on things. They used to come with a simple extension cord and that was a problem…

Pros
  • High power, light weight neodymium magnets; PET cone extends bass and frequency response
Cons
  • Sad package

Weird design, a few minor remarks, but overall top notch

I got these headphones for my birthday after someone I knew online recommended them. I have to admit the design is funny - one headphone cable is much longer than the other, and the main part of the cable is too short for normal use. You get an extension cord, but it's too long for normal use. I'm not a very conceited person so I took the suggestion suggested here of tying part of the extender with zip ties and using the extender all the time in normal use. This works great and solves the…

Better options available.

UPDATE 12/31/08 I wrote the review below 4 years ago and headphone technology has come a long way. Prices have come down and technology has improved. At this time, the Sennheiser CX300 is the best choice for an entry-level IEM. The Sony has muddy bass, reduced imaging and muffled mids. The CX300 is significantly better than the '71 and I expect the CX300 will serve all non-bass heads better. Since getting the CX300 I've spent more money looking for better headphones and the Q-Jays are my…
