Works better than expected

I bought a new desktop but didn't have an eSata port to connect the 2TB backup drive that contained all the files from the old computer. The eSata drive had a USB 3 connector, but data transfer was slower than expected for 30,000 high-resolution image files. I found this adapter for Revain and figured out the price, I didn't have to risk much. Much to my surprise, this eSata performed better (faster) than expected. I can recommend if you need something like that.

  • Complete kit

Breathing new life into an old drive

I had an unused 500GB hard drive on my desk because the enclosure it was in only had USB2 speeds. I've never used an eSATA connector on a case before, so I took a chance and bought this cable. At first I was disappointed because the cable does not provide power. Data bus only. BUT! After connecting it via the old USB2 port, I was able to transfer files to this drive incredibly fast compared to the old transfer speeds. I really wanted to dismiss the cable because it doesn't deliver power, but aโ€ฆ

ADD USB3.0 TO OLD ESATA DRIVE BAYS

I bought this to connect a GUARDIAN Raid 1 with USB 2.0 / FW 800 / ESATA box to my NAS for offsite backup. Works like a champ. I get the maximum speed for hard drives. I also tested it on the OWC single drive bay. He worked great. Works seamlessly on Ubuntu 20.04 and Synology NAS. PROS: Cheap way to use USB 3.0 with old external storage that only has USB 2.0 and eSATA. AGAINST: I don't see it.

Works on my 2015 MacBook Air, even through USB hubs

The StarTech adapter works (seemingly fine) between my 2015 MacBook Air and an external RAID drive. In fact, it even works with two USB3.0 hubs in between (not sure if that's recommended, but it works), despite my concerns that the overall length of the cable is around 3ft, which might be close to the maximum eSATA cable can be (not sure). I ran some performance measurements and the throughput was the same whether I used one or two USB hubs, around 70 Mb/s or 550 Mb/s, well below theโ€ฆ

Quality cable but not suitable for my purposes.

I have an old ICY Dock with a 1 TB Western Digital Caviar Green hard drive. The ICY Dock has a USB 2 port and an eSATA port. I wanted an ICY Dock Case via eSATA to my MacMini running Mojave Ver. 10.14.3. I also had a new 1TB LaCie external SSD connected as USB 3. I've tried connecting the ICY docking station directly to the MacMini's USB port and also through a USB hub. Regardless of the configuration, Mojave crashed every now and then. The drive worked fine for a while, but when the systemโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Hands-free kit
Cons
  • Very expensive

I have a pair of RocketFish eSATA/USB 2.0 combo drive enclosures (Best Buy's own brand). They were very versatile, but I don't have many computers with eSATA ports anymore. This means I had to use a much slower USB 2.0 connection to use these cases. Enter these StarTech eSATA to USB 3.0 cables. Speed restored! I was able to access drives in enclosures at eSATA speeds far faster than USB 2.0. No problems or bugs. Originally posted a 5 star review, I have downgraded it to 3 stars. I bought aโ€ฆ
