Works like a thermostat. I would recommend always keeping that in mind when purchasing. You don't want to go to great lengths to replace any of them, especially when you have to remove the alternator and serpentine belt like I did, only to find it doesn't work. Installed normally, but did not let air bubbles through and therefore did not open. After many big headaches and wasting a lot of time trying to "burp" the system, I finally had to remove it and drill a small bypass hole to allow air to escape. Replaces thermostat on Camry SE 4-cyl. 2012 (AR2FE engine) with 130,000 miles. At the same time, hoses, belts and coolant were changed (a first for this car). Unfortunately, and frankly unforgivably, a thermostat gasket is NOT included (just cheating Toyota consumers).
