ASUS C246M Pro for NAS Server Build

Workstation functions are built into this motherboard. It supports ECC memory and I'm using a Crucial ECC DIMM with an i3-9100 with ECC support. Be sure to update the BIOS for 9th Gen processors and luckily it allows you to update the BIOS without a processor with the onboard Flashback button. The board has a convenient power switch. It has a lot of features that I'll probably never use, but if I later decide to make it a Windows desktop PC or something, it has that option. As a previous…

Does not support AMT, does not support out-of-band remote management

Does not support AMT, does not support out-of-band remote management. There are ASUS/ASRock C246M boards that support remote management, but they use ASPEED chipset instead of Intel AMT. ASPEED chipset problem, the graphics controller will also use the ASPEED chipset instead of the CPU's iGPU, in other words, if you want to run a headless Plex server with iGPU hardware acceleration support and external remote control support, you should consider ASUS, ASRock and Supermicro.

    good BIOS, questionable hardware design

I bought this board to use as a GPU - Compute node to use a Linux HPC cluster and possibly a head node. This may adequately meet my needs. My main concerns with the board relate to the design/quality of the hardware. Pros: BIOS. The options were amazing. It has many features that make it easy to use as a server or compute node, especially ipmi and bmc. Whatever you want, this board probably has it. Except for one feature that I absolutely want to have (more on that later). Cons: HW QUALITY. The

    Asus does it again.

Create a new storage server. Requires ECC and at least 8 SATA ports. I started with a similar Gigabyte model. It was very easy. No built-in speaker for beeps, no LED indicators for troubleshooting. I was having trouble starting and tried this one. difference between day and night. Asus packs the board with diagnostic lights all over it, has a BIOS flash utility that can only be used with power cords plugged into the board, and a speaker that beeps when something goes wrong. Got it and ran it…
