Description of Yost Vises 905 AS Heavy-Duty Steel

Bench-mount vise with 5" nominal top jaw width and 1/2"- to 1-1/2"-diameter pipe capacity provides clamping action for light-duty applications. 360-degree swivel base adjusts the direction of the jaws for proper placement and locks in place. Cast steel body is painted black for mild protection against corrosion and has flat portion that acts as a reinforced anvil and an additional work surface. Replaceable top jaws and built-in pipe jaws are grooved for enhanced grip. Main screw that controls the jaws is covered by a bar to protect it from damage.

Sturdy but poorly made

The steel jaws of the vise I received were not parallel. I could squeeze one side of a jaw to bring it closer, but it's clear there was no quality control in the making of this vise. I'm an amateur so it suits my needs but I wouldn't touch it for a pro tool. Because it was poorly built I only gave it two stars for value - it's only worth half of what I paid for it. Time will tell if it holds up!

Pros
  • The main screw that controls the jaws is covered with a bar to protect against damage
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

That's a big vice.

I didn't find anything I didn't like about this vise. It's well built and I particularly like the fact that it's made of steel rather than cast iron. I've only used it to work on a few small projects, but I'm sure it can handle larger ones as well. I mounted mine on two pieces of 3/4" birch plywood that I spliced together to make them 1 1/2" thick. I attach it to my desktop, but if need be I can remove it and take it to the garage.

Pros
  • 360 degree rotating base adjusts the direction of the jaws for proper placement and locking in place
Cons
  • Other interesting options are available.

Good solid vise for the money

I'm just a hobbyist so I need an inexpensive but functional vise. It turned out to be the right choice. It's durable, beautiful, with excellent grip. Crank rotation is smooth enough for my needs. I'm sure there are better professional vises out there, but these can competently handle any project I try around the house. I don't regret buying this vise.

Pros
  • Replacement jaws and integral tube jaws are grooved for better grip
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled
