Frequently overheats and stops working

Two problems: 1. It gets hot. How hot? Alarmingly hot for a small electronic device. While this is normal for 5/10Gb Base-T devices and modules, I'm pretty sure it causes problem number two: 2. Randomly locked. The lights keep flashing, but it no longer communicates with the host. Depending on the computer, the adapter simply disappears and does not return without restarting or reconnecting. Check out the reviews. See a large number of 1 stars. learn it I thought maybe this product was…

Pros
  • High support and durability ratings from testers
Cons
  • Corrupt

Great adapter - performance may be limited on older computers

Compact size - great function. It connects at 5.0 Gbps on Linux (Fedora). However, the throughput of iperf3 is around 2.8 Gbps due to the limitations of the 2013 machine it is connected to. It's still 2.8x faster than native 1GbE, so no complaints here. The only vulnerability I found is in the Linux driver itself. It takes time to mature. It initializes slowly and is therefore not ready fast enough when the system boots up. Network connected shares sometimes need to be manually mounted offline.

  • Rugged design

Terrible driver!

I bought two of these. One for PC and one for QNAP NAS (which was on the compatibility list). The driver for this is terrible. For both Windows 10 and QNAP QTS OS! This works well if you want to pass a few bytes back and forth, or if you just want to log into a computer remotely. When you transfer large files from this device to another place, it works for a while, but after about 30 minutes of data transfer, it gets blocked. The only way to recover is to turn the device off and on again. Who…

NOT for Mac! for USB network adapter

I was really excited to try this product as I have a 2012 Macbook and Mac mini that don't have Thunderbolt 3 ports so I can't get a Thunderbolt 10GBE dongle. I thought this was the best option for faster transfer between your Mac and Nas, which is why I bought it. This is not supported by Apple, Qnap says it will be soon but hasn't mentioned when it will be soon! I assumed the Catalina release would be considered "soon" but no. They say you can get it working if you download the drivers from a…

Junk for $80

This one "works" (note the quotes) and uses my laptop's USB 3 port intermittently. Completely hit or miss. The drivers are terrible, apparently the update doesn't add reliability. Firmware update brings nothing. Windows 10 hit or miss. Will it work? It will not work? Who knows.Linux? Same deal. In Ubuntu, the driver is built into kernel version 20.10. It worked fine, but now it doesn't work at all. Who knows what's wrong. It never worked properly. It works WORSE with USB, it seemed to work fine

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • No instructions

Faulty hardware and poor customer support

I purchased this device in March 2020 to increase bandwidth from my Windows 10 desktop to my switch stack and ensure nightly backups stay overnight. A few months go by and I'm starting to notice some stability issues. Connections are broken. try updating your drivers and firmware. no improvement. with time. kept trying to use it but it got worse and worse to the point where windows reports usb over voltage and the device freezes badly. It took some trial and error to narrow down the choice to…

From day one "Overview "

The installation process is confusing if you have a Windows PC. According to the manual, just download the drivers. That's all the manual says. However, they leave out a lot of information about the actual installation of the drivers. It seems that the download only installs the driver to turn your network adapter into a CD drive on your Windows machine. Nothing tells you this and installing the file from the QNAP website just installs and disappears. You don't see how it works. I thought I…

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.

When I first received the device, I was amazed. Finally something faster than 1 gigabit. I have no idea why the ethernet controller market is growing so slowly when the amount of data is getting so big, but that's how it is now. I was able to get a 5 Gigabit connection by plugging it into a generic 10GBE Ethernet SFP+ in a Mikrotik CRS305-1G-4S+IN. However, after a year the connection started to hang. The adapter continues to report the connection, but no data is transmitted over it. There was…
