Review on ASUS VE228H 1920X1080 Back Lit Monitor 21.5", 60Hz, Wide Screen, by Jeff Basara

Revainrating 5 out of 5

HDMI, DVI, NO white glare and less than $200. WOW!

I've been using this monitor for at least 4 months now and I've never been happier with my purchase! The discount offered was great too! I was able to connect it to my Macbook via DVI and my Xbox 360. I'm waiting to bring my PS3. This beauty has run without glitches or dead pixels so far, and the speakers on the back are a nice addition to this quality monitor. I want to dispel a certain myth about white highlights mirroring at the edges of the monitor. That's totally wrong. The edges of the monitor are beveled, and what they call "monitor glare" is just light hitting the curve of the beveled edges, making it appear like the brightness of the screen. I'm so glad I bought this monitor despite their reviews on the subject. This is a really high quality monitor. I really wanted a ViewSonic 23 inch 1080p with LED but to be honest after 2 of these were shipped to me and both were returned the quality is really low compared to this ASUS monitor. You really get what you get for what you pay for, and having a bigger screen is pointless if the colors are off and you don't like it. This is another thing I really like about this monitor compared to the Viewsonic, although ASUS is 1.5 inches smaller, its colors are more true and the blacks look very deep. I also like that this monitor has buttons to adjust the volume, brightness, input signal and even the screen mode (Scenario, Game Mode, Theater, Night View, Standard), although these presets can also be changed, I found 80 Brightness, 70 Contrast and 53/55 saturation was the best for my games. Try not to get bogged down with the color setting, that's my top tip. And frankly, lower the brightness level. They save so much work on the eyes and bring more life to the monitor's backlight (although LED is so effective these days). I am also pleased with the thinness of the monitor. Unlike the ViewSonic, there are no HDMI, LED, or 1080P displays on the bezel like some other monitors. It has a simple Asus name on the bottom and a small HDMI on the top left. The Most Important Things You Should Know About This Monitor! There are **2** 3.5mm audio inputs. The one in green is for whatever tone you want to see on your monitor, and the one that's extremely hard to see is black and should be the furthest away. This black forwards the input from the monitor to the headphones, for example. So with my Xbox 360 or PS3, I connect them via HDMI and plug my headphones into the black input on the monitor. My only complaint (and this applies to ALL monitors) is that the base isn't heavy enough and I really wish they would just fill it with lead. lol. I mean, for a monitor this good, the base could be a bit heavier and the "stick" (where the base connects to the monitor) could be more solid. But other than that it's a really good monitor and I don't see many that offer HDMI for less than $200. Well done Asus!
