Review on HP 25 Inch Wide Screen Monitor - 2509M (Model: NT195AA#ABA) by John Higgins

Good monitor but smells of volatile organic compounds

The monitor is good but not as sharp as my Samsung. I have no complaints about the pictures, the text is clear. I'll get to why I only gave 2 stars. Many chemicals are released when switched on. For those of you who work in an open, well-ventilated area, this might not be a big deal. These VOCs (volatile organic compounds), like "new car smell," can be very toxic and cause strange symptoms that doctors don't know the cause of or how to deal with. Symptoms like acne, rashes, fatigue, dry eyes, watery eyes and more can be caused by chemicals from heated circuit boards and even some plastic cases. You don't have to smell some of these VOCs for them to work on you. This monitor is warm to the touch and definitely emits volatile organic compounds. I looked at photos as I worked and found I couldn't see the detail I was looking for in a lighted room. I built my "bat cave", a 4x8 room with blackout curtains on three sides. A side facing away from the window is completely open. Things were going well until I moved this monitor to the "bat cave". There is a certain VOC smell, but worse, in this semi-enclosed room the VOCs are so strong my eyes are watering so bad I can't see the screen. I often have to take breaks. Before that, the screen worked 8-10 hours without any problems. I am about to move this screen to an open space next to a window and I have ordered a new screen from Revain which a reviewer says is low on VOCs. I really hope it's because I can't work on it. I hope this review will raise everyone's awareness of the problems with radiation from electronics in general. Many computers and other electronic devices emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and can become toxic to you over time, especially if you use them for many hours a day. Folks, USE VENTILATION! I hope more reviewers will comment on whether or not the product gives off smelly fumes. I'm very curious about products that don't smell! That's what I'm looking for.
