Not a perfect product but does what it's supposed to do

The Canon EOS-1 DX doesn't have built-in GPS. So, being traveling in a foreign country where I had a somewhat nebulous idea of geography, I decided to get a GP-E1 for my trip. To cut costs I bought a used one from one of the "used and new" suppliers but made sure the manual and software was included. The GPS map software provided on the CD cannot be purchased or downloaded separately from Canon like some other software. This software is a program that displays a world map and overlays your GPS locations on the map. People tell me that the information is accessible in Lightroom, so you don't need the Canon CD and software to do it. But I don't have Lightroom on my laptop, so I wanted to make sure I had that capability (more for fun than anything). In any case, the device records the location with sufficient accuracy, including in EXIF. However, there is a learning curve for this device. I learned two things mentioned in the user manual: 1. Turn on the camera as soon as you get to the place where you are going to take pictures. This gives the GP-E1 time to find the GPS satellite and record its location. Once recognized, it won't take long to find the signal again, provided They don't move very fast or in a fast-moving vehicle. For example, filming a baseball game, I turned on the camera as soon as I got off the bus and let the GP-E1 find the signal. After that, all my photos were taken with Location.2. If you turn the camera switch to the "OFF" position, the whole process should start again when you turn the camera switch back to the "ON" position. It's much better to leave the camera on and let the camera "sleep" because pressing the button to wake the camera will acquire the location much faster. If you manually turn off the camera, the GPS module will need to restart when turning it back on. When it turns off from sleep or hibernation, it knows when it wakes up back to where it is and doesn't have to do a full search. I do these two steps every time so I've had a lot more success. block than others. Some reviewers found fault with the connection to the camera and the block falling out. I don't understand how this can happen when the unit is plugged into the socket and the wheel is turned to lock it like the Canon flash in the old (FD) variants. BTW, if you are using a GP-E1 with an L-Bracket, buy the Kirk L-Bracket, not the RRS L-Bracket. The Kirk mount has a notch for the GP-E1 block and holds it very well. Buy the Kirk L mount, not the RRS L mount. The Kirk mount has a notch for the GP-E1 block and holds it very well. Buy the Kirk L-Bracket, not the RRS L bracket.
