I must first state that I have been using the same film for at least 2 years and it works great. It's been in the last 3 months that the old one gave off a strange smell every time I heated it, which prompted me to buy a new one (the heat capacity hasn't changed in all those months and years, mind you, only the smell ). I saw a few reviews from other users about the smell when they bought and used it, but I related that to the smell I got from my old one and assumed the reviewers who were complained, probably had more sensitive nasal passages than mine, and could have dealt with that for a while. Boy was I wrong! First, it gave off an odor that was very different from my 2+ year old back wrap buddy. Second, the smell was very close to what I didn't want any memories of. A close relative recently passed away (bless his soul) and I was there as his canned body was prepared for the final journey. .The smell of the heated back brought back memories of having been in that room. I'm not saying all Carex Back Wrap Buddies are bad because I figured it's better to deal with the smell of the old one (it's a cut below terrible) than the smell of this new one. And I've had NO odor issues for the first two years of using my old one. So they obviously made some changes to the product during that time and that's what's causing this smell. Equally important, the new one didn't retain the smell. the same amount of heat as the old one. If I heat the new one up to the same time as the old one, to one it doesn't seem warm enough, and second, no matter how little heat it has, it gives it off very quickly. I'm either looking for a new brand or making my own travel bags as another reviewer suggested. It's a shame because the same brand of backing has served me so well over the past few years.
