I only received this carafe last week and have used it several times. As with all thermographs, best results are achieved by first heating them with hot water, then keeping them hot for many hours. (Just last night I left some herbal tea in when I went to bed and it was still warm this morning.) All the while, the outside and bottom of the carafe stays fairly cool and can be placed on any table without a stand or napkin. needed to protect the wood. I think it looks elegant and attractive on a table and complements almost any style. One reviewer noted that the top and handle were plastic rather than metal and felt this spoiled the high-end look; I personally don't think it looks overtly plastic, and aside from the fact that the top and handle are the only parts that get hot when there's hot liquid inside, I imagine if they were metal, they might the handle may be too hot to hold comfortably, so I think that's a fair compromise. Very happy with this purchase and would recommend to others.
