This appliance is very light and tends to slip on flat surfaces. There are no handles on the bottom. There is no raised lip around the perimeter, so the mug slips off easily if accidentally hit. Unfortunately, I was unable to test the heat factors because the device's sensor was not working properly. The only way to reactivate the device after removing the mug was to tap the rim with your fingers or use the switch to restart it. In all cases, flat-bottom cups are used. Can't comment on the auto shut off as I finally gave in and returned the heating pad for a refund.
