Review on Pet πŸšͺ Door Small - RuffWeather by Shanna Lopez

Now the cats are out!

I bought this and a small Ruff-Weather pet door wall kit. I'm posting the same review for both products because they work together to make this awesome cat door (seriously, it's awesome for us). This door means no one else has to be the bouncer for the cats. They always want in, they want out, they want in, then they want out. Now they can come and go as they please. I have used them all (6) within 24 hours. With me on one side and my husband on the other, we gently pushed each cat back and forth through the door several times so she would understand what it meant. I lifted one of the doors and looked inside so they could see there was a hole. We tried to make it fun, let them do what they want (like in, out, in, over and over). Each of them had their own motivation to get through the first time alone. For one cat, Bailey, this was a second breakfast opportunity - he saw me put the plate through the sliding door, I lifted the lid to call him and show him the plate so hopefully he could sniff it, while my husband lifted the other flap so it could look straight out. His eyes lit up when he realized it was still food, we both let go of the doors to let them fall back down and the next thing we saw Bailey was pushing them both through alone - we gave for that him food! Another cat, Leto, went through this alone for the first time to get outside to be with us (he's a social type). Each of them has its own way of entering and exiting. One will lift the first sheet with his paw so his head should just poke through the second sheet. I don't know why, but he does. The other will stand there and just squeeze the valve a few times (like he just loves to hear him make the "fwap-fwap-fwap" sound over and over again) before finally going through it. A cat always drives at full speed with a head start. Another butt crawls through it and tries to sort of come out (through the door we put there so they can do just that!). observe others. We never showed her that or anything, she just threw it through one day (probably within a day or two of seeing it, and by then she was neutered so it was fine). One of our cats who was found on a busy road during a rainstorm was always terrified of the road and the kitten we brought home was the one who encouraged him to finally work up the courage to open the door! He wanted to play with her so much that he followed her out the cat door one night without us noticing. At first he ran back when he saw us on the street. Now he's pretty good at it and will get in touch when he comes back. You'll hear the popping (very faint, but I recognize the sound now - again, each cat going through sounds a little different depending on whether it's overflowing or quietly squeezing the flaps) then you'll hear him howl, that he is inside. We live almost in the middle of nowhere, forests everywhere, and possums foraging on the porch, often walk past this door, they see cats going in and out through this door, and not once, except cats, enter, except insects which they bring us (giant cicadas, moths, big cats etc - great for cats because now they can bring us a gift directly - hooray, sort of). We installed the cat flap a little over a year ago. I would say that heat loss in the winter is minimal (2 dampers actually seem to be working) and we have a heck of a lot of heat in the summer now which is great. The wings are more scratched now and I rubbed them a few times to keep them clean. We're obviously cat people. We installed it within a week of buying this home and it was probably the best purchase we've made since moving in. Oh yes, sometimes there are still cats waiting at the sliding door, as if they were too good for a cat. door, and maybe you can get a slider for them and put them in the "big door". But when they see you walk in with a freshly grilled steak, suddenly every cat is in a cat door. Conclusion --- BENEFITS: everything - cat freedom, fun moments, gifts delivered right to your feet, no need to get up. 50 times a day for someone to hop in and out of VS: nothing fancy, but make sure you have the right tools before attempting to set this up. A proper understanding of the wall also helps.
