Good value for money with few exceptions

I have been looking for a cheap SSD since my tower computer and couldn't resist the brand and price of this SSD. At a reduced price of thirty dollars, this is a bargain. My need for a solid state drive is different than most users. My tower already has a 256GB Samsung PCI SSD that it boots from and 3 terabytes of mechanical disk space. While this is more than adequate for normal use, editing files in Photoshop/After Effects became a problem as the boot drive would be full and the mechanical hard drive would be too slow for fast storage. This Sandisk SSD has become a great and inexpensive "scratch drive" for storing temporary files. Unfortunately, installing it in my PC case was a bit of a hassle, which is one of the reasons I only gave the drive four stars instead of five. The packaging is minimal and does not include any extra cables or instructions. Luckily, a SATA cable was already included when I bought my PC motherboard. After installing and connecting the drive, I started my computer and found that Windows does not recognize the drive. Turns out the hard drive was fully serviceable and just wasn't formatted for some reason. Using the built-in Disk Management software in Windows solved this problem. The performance matches the price. The write speed is a little disappointing, being only slightly faster than what my 7200RPM drive normally achieves, but the read speed is more than 10x faster. There's also a noticeable improvement when working in applications like Photoshop, as saves now typically take only a few seconds compared to the tens of seconds save times I've achieved with mechanical hard drives. More than enough capacity for a working hard drive. In general, I like the SSD, despite some shortcomings. Most users should be able to get good performance out of it.

Pros
  • Easy upgrade for faster startup, shutdown, application loading and responsiveness (compared to a 2.5" SATA 5400 rpm hard drive; based on published specs and internal Benchmark tests using PCMark results Vantage.)
Cons
  • Some errors
