I'm a picky music lover, but I've never considered headphones important enough to spend a lot on them. The sound is clear with little distortion and very good detail. However, there is an obvious peak around 4kHz that leads to rapid fatigue. Note that 4 kHz is the most typical band for the onset of hearing loss. So it was smart and helpful to use the Active Dewarping plugin on my LG V20. The LG V20, like other LG phones since the V10, is known for its four DACs, which at least one tech site rates as unbeatable in portable options. I compared the sound to my Audio-Technica ATH-M50x phones, which I think come close to electrostatic quality. The following setting has a tonal balance very close to that of the ATH-M50X: LG V20, Quad-DAC enabled: Android "Neutralizer" plugin enabled. , with an equalization curve that is a logarithmic line graph, with +3 dB at 63 Hz, 0 dB at 1 kHz, -2 dB at 4 kHz, and -3 dB at 8 and 16 kHz. FIIO A5 low gain amplifier with bass boost enabled. Regular ear pads are replaced by Comply T500. Audio source: Spotify, very high quality setting. This is a fully wired setup. It's enough to make me happy if the M50X weighs too much. And I'm hard to please. The physical quality implying durability is better than the original sound quality.
