Removed elements from 20 years ago

Thanks to people who shared their experiences on the internet, I decided to replace the elements of the water heater myself. Only one part was bad, but I decided to replace both while I was at it (it's an 80 gallon tank). My problem was that the old elements got stuck and these elements have a very thin hex head so every socket I had just slipped off. When I bought this socket, I hoped that everything would be fine. That didn't work at first because the elements clamped like they were welded on and the head simply slipped off the nut due to all the weight on the handle. Screws in the floor covering and the like. It came with a 1/2" adapter. The ability to apply pressure directly to the element and the impact of the drill bit worked together to slowly but easily loosen each element. I also used WD-40, but I think so not that that contributed to my success. If you look at a typical head the hexes are often slightly lowered into the sleeve, usually at an angle from the sleeve bore to the notch then the notch will barely hold (if at all) a thin nut, which is pressed against a hard surface (such as a water heater tank) This socket has a small angle of that angle, but not enough to avoid working with an impact wrench/screwdriver.

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • Discontinued model
