Cheaper options are available but they usually come with older processors, third party or inferior quality components and improperly licensed and/or compromised operating systems (and BIOS). -it). I'm a big Asus fan and Gigabyte's quality is on par. This base system is a great match for the components I have chosen: - Memory: TEAMGROUP Elite DDR4 32GB (2 x 16GB) 2666MHz PC4-21300 CL19 kit. 1.2V Non-ECC 1.2V 260-pin SODIMM Unbuffered SSD: SK Hynix Gold P31 500GB PCIe NVMe Gen3 M.2 2280 Internal SSD - up to 3500MB/s. I use Linux Manjaro as my operating system, which works great - all hardware (including sound and wifi) is recognized immediately. I have enough memory to run other operating systems in virtual machines if needed. This machine can be configured to automatically restart after a power failure, making it ideal as an unattended server. The included Core i5 processor is on par with previous Core i7 generations (4 cores, 8 threads), but consumes less power. The extra storage speed and SSD make a big difference (at least compared to my old laptop with the i7-3632QM). This is a laptop processor, so don't expect desktop performance. OTOH, you still get great performance in a great form factor. No fancy overclocks or memory settings in BIOS if you like it. No problems with monitor sleep/standby (number of cables) or too loud fan noise. The fan speed depends on the temperature/load of the machine. For example, noticeable in a quiet room while compiling code, but barely audible in idle mode. Right now I have it on my desk, but I can put it under my desk along with the modem and router. Some quibbles. The L-shaped power plug provided with the device fits laptops with a side power connector, but not this device with a rear power connector. And (only one) audio output on the front panel - OK when using headphones, not suitable when connected to speakers. I added a USB sound card on the back for use with speakers and left the input for occasional headphone use. A USB hub is also useful to keep all connections on the back. There was an error in my manual regarding installing a 2.5" drive - it mentioned a cage. There is no cage and the online manual shows the correct installation method, screwing directly into the bottom cover.
