Ammonium chloride is different from ammonia. Both can be used for fishless aquarium looping. This product works and can be used to drive/maintain an aquarium with no fish. Some things to look out for: The active ingredient in this product is ammonium chloride, which contains chloride ions. Chlorine is dangerous for living plants. If you have live plants in your aquarium you should exercise caution when using this product or use ammonia instead. This product is very strong and will only get stronger with time (like sitting on a shelf for a year). My advice is to follow the directions at 1/4 or 1/2 and then test the treated water to see if the ppm ammonia is at the desired level. Then add more product in small increments as needed until the desired ppm ammonia level is reached. The guide is easy to use. The small reservoir and ability to dispense drops per gallon are handy. It works and is a good alternative to buying a large container of ammonia. Good value for money.
