dogs were dying, we decided to move our chihuahua into the living room where most of the action takes place rather than the room that was dedicated to our dogs. You cannot trust a Chihuahua to roam freely because they mark everything as their territory. We bought her as a compromise, when we're not around she fits in her playpen. She has a bed in a box with blankets, a potty on the floor of the playpen. She is happier than ever, apart from missing her canine friend. She is so happy that she has her own space and she knows that cats cannot reach her. And since we can fit a separate drawer for her bed, she can't clutter her bed. Which we struggled with when trying to grab it.
