Purchased for use with Fluval C3 Inlet Filter; Firstly I was expecting baby shrimp from a couple of my berry shrimp I had and I needed something to block the inlet to keep them from being sucked in and secondly after the poly filter had clogged a few since I had the Fluval C3 (indicator sticking out) About a week or a week and a half between replacing the polypropylene gasket, I decided I needed a pre-filter that I could easily clean to extend the life. The only problem is that these pre-filters are not coarse filters; they have a fine mesh that captures particles very well; I would almost say that based on my experience they could be classified as "filter thread" sponge pre-filters and I have found on two occasions that water did not even come out of the spout that directed the water into the trickle. dry filter material; along with water that barely comes out of the return of the hob. At first glance, I looked at the sponge and saw that the pre-filter didn't have what appeared to be a massive build-up of dirt that indicated it needed cleaning/and/or replacement. At first I thought maybe the pump had failed, but to my surprise I decided to replace the pre-filter with a clean one and the flow in the filter became much better; although it's not the same flow as when I first bought these brand new pre-filters which I've cleaned several times. On recent aquarium maintenance (water change, gravel cleaning, plant trimming and Fluval cooktop cleaning) I was back on the filter in less than 24 hours by simply dripping water from the return, I replaced the pre-filter with a clean one, and it worked again for at least one few days before it had to be replaced again. That being said, the Fluval C3 filter is probably just very sensitive to using a pre-filter of this density, so I won't knock it down. Stars because the product has no defects, but for my application I find it cumbersome to replace the pre-filter in less than 24 hours at worst. I will look for a coarser pre-filter for Fluval C3.
