Review on πŸ”§ Versatile UNI-T UT89XD Digital Multimeter: TRMS 6000 Counts, AC/DC Voltage Tester, Resistance, Capacitance, Diode, NCV, Temperature & LED Test by Micheal Wright

Revainrating 3 out of 5

One of the best handheld rangefinders, especially for Chinese

Functionally comparable to BTMETER BT770S. Each is rated for 20 amps and has easily accessible fuses. It doesn't have temperature readings, but it does have one of the best LED test capabilities - 11 volts compared to 3-5 on most others. I didn't understand how this setting doesn't burn out the 3V LED. But it's not - I've tried. I chose this device, which costs about $7 more than BT, because it got the top rating on Youtube, but there aren't enough reviews for this device to filter out personal bias. Two disadvantages: 1) weak continuity function; the light does not come on when the probes are briefly touched - the probes should keep contact for almost a second, all the instructions that came with this device were in Chinese. There is no English version at all. Each gauge is unique and has one or more features that require a manual to make life easier. The seller couldn't help. To me, this makes the meter possibly "returnworthy". A few words about "auto-ranging" and "manual-ranging" multimeters. Some argue that autoranging gauges are easier to use. This is not my experience. Often the reading displayed on an auto-ranging meter is different from what you expect. The readings in the manual correspond to the values you set, so there are no surprises or dizziness when you switch from u to m to the units you are measuring. So for the occasional user or beginner, I would suggest a handheld rangefinder like the one used by Mr. Platt in the Making: Electronics series of books. In fact, autoranging isn't as "automatic" as one might think. Most of the time, even if you get the setting right, you still have to choose between DC and AC or an incremental range of values like ohms and megohms.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • I won't say anything
