Review on ๐Ÿ” Kensington Clicksafe Combination Cable Lock: Secure Your Laptop and Devices with K64697US by Erik Haynes

Revainrating 3 out of 5

It's a solid lock but I expected a lot more from the company that created the standard (UPDATED 08/2015)

PRO: It feels very strong, the locks close quickly - easy to fit. You don't have to worry about the right combination to lock, only to unlock. Comes with a cable tie for easy cable management. NEUTRAL: The thick 5mm braided cable gives me extra security, but it's also less flexible so there are some additional locking issues. CONS: The lock doesn't work on one of my laptops. doesn't really lock when the plug is tight and needs regular adjustment. The combo buttons are very stiff and small, making them difficult to rotate, especially individually; requires some hacking. After breaking, the keys rotate more freely. Thoughts: The locking mechanism is a plug that fits into the locking hole and is secured by tightening the hex screw. On my Clevo W230SS laptop, the latch doesn't properly engage the connector when the subwoofer is tightened and worse, if it's too tight it seems to latch, but if you wiggle it enough the latch will pop right out. When tightening you have to make sure it has enough slack to screw the connector in, but if it has slack it will gradually loosen over time to the point where the connector falls out. It needs to be tightened and tightened with a 1.5 allen key about once a week, but I also used a T6 torx screwdriver. It wouldn't be so bad if it was a size 0 Phillips as the screw isn't available when the lock is in place and Phillips is much more common. The key that comes with the lock is very small and very easy to lose. Luckily for me as a geek I always carry a screwdriver with me and have hex and torx bits in addition to the standard Phillips and flat bits so it's not too hard for me to find something to tighten the screw with. , but this should be taken into account if you do not already have such a screwdriver. However, I recently got my hands on a Lenovo X220, which has a perfectly rigid metal body and the protrusion fits snugly and securely, unlike my W230SS. You really need to make sure your laptop is well built and has a perfectly flat and hard surface where the lock hole is. The locking mechanism is so finicky that it's a gross oversight, especially at this price point - I expect a lock to just work, especially when I can get a generic one for half the price; A hit or miss is totally unacceptable on a lock of nearly $30. However, the lock seems very secure and when paired with the right laptop it is very convenient to lock. If this experience were universal it would be a perfect 5 star lock but that is a godsend and if you are unlucky you may need regular adjustments and the risk of the bar or lock falling out. not fully engaged on the bar. Overall, I prefer the other lock I got at Revain for $10 less to protect my much more valuable gaming laptop, which makes me far more disappointed in this particular lock. Still, I feel 100% secure with this lock on my X220. When it works, the experience and confidence it inspires is great, but the nature of this lock is disappointing, even more so considering its name and price.
