Review on ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Akasa Turing Intel 8th Generation NUC Fanless Cooling Case with Aluminium Build, IR, Heatsink, Antenna Hole, 2.5" SSD HDD Support - Model A-NUC45-M1B by William Auditore

Very good NUC jammer case. Requires some rework.

My 1 year old NUC was overheating and making nagging fan noise. I opened it up (thanks ifixit) and dusted off the heat exchanger, but it was still making horrible noises. Instead of replacing the fan (which can take a year), I decided to try one of these cases. In essence, the Turing is a large aluminum radiator. There are several holes for racks. You take the motherboard out of the NUC, clean the CPU and surrounding surfaces with toilet paper and rubbing alcohol, apply thermal grease, and screw the motherboard onto the case's heatsink. I encountered two issues: 1. Since the stands were hammered into soft aluminum, I didn't want to push the screws too hard. After assembly, the NUC shut down due to overheating. I opened it up and tightened the screws a little more. This solved the problem.2. There was no video output from either the USB-C port or the HDMI port. When I removed the back panel (easy to do) the HDMI port worked fine. USB-C is still dead. Turns out the back panel was too thick to fit the HDMI plug to the socket. The USB-C hole has also been moved slightly. I enlarged the HDMI hole and it worked. My guess is that either the plug or the USB-C socket got damaged trying to insert it into the misaligned, undersized hole. It's good that the manufacturer uses durable aluminum, but large HDMI and USB-C openings would be nice. It is now on my desk and works perfectly. Completely silent and not even warm to the touch. Pretty cute too - if you like finned heatsinks :-)

Pros
  • HIGH PERFORMANCE - Aluminum heatsink enclosure with passive CPU cooling effectively improves heat dissipation for improved performance.
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
