We bought this gate as a second line of defense to fit the inside of the door into our basement (in case the door was accidentally left open). For this purpose it is ideal. I love that the gate opens and swings in every direction making it easier for adults to go up and down stairs with laundry etc. Also, they're pretty strong and I doubt a toddler would find a way to push through this gate. If installed correctly, they're a good choice for the top of the stairs. The only complaint I have is the latch on the swing gates. It's designed to hug you and lock automatically. However, it is almost impossible for us to set it up in such a way that it gets stuck every time. I would say 50% success. If it doesn't fire, we have to press a button to make it lock. A slight inconvenience, but annoying when you've got a whole handful of laundry in your hands. It also led to some paranoia, so I always and twice check the gate. Once attached, it does its job.
