Cheap but effective - you get what you pay for

This isn't a compass you bet your life on. This is what I call a "spare compass" or a compass that you would give a child so they could learn to navigate using a map and compass. All of which means you CAN use it to navigate the desert - assuming you have a map and know how to use a compass. The compass comes with a declination adjustment tool, but there are no instructions on how to use it. There is nothing on the internet and there are no written instructions. So you need to know the magnetic declination for your area and compensate manually. The scales 1:24,000 and 1:50,000 printed on the base plate and a small zoom range make it easier to read fine details on the map. There are also centimeter and inch scales. In terms of brightness, there's a small speck of bright paint on the north end of the pen and a couple of bright directional markers on the baseplate. These glowing markers would be of little use if you relied on them at night - are you really sure you want to roam through forests, mountains or desert at night? If you want to do this, buy a compass with a Cammenga lens and tritium-illuminated markers. For me, my days of night navigation are over. If you need a basic compass that gets the job done and you don't plan on going on a big expedition, this compass is for you. It is definitely worth what it is sold for.
