2003 DR Z400 was stock and worked horribly. I've always thought of just taking the carb off and cleaning it, spending $80 on a jet kit, or just ordering $10 injectors to make a 3x3 airbox mod. I got the kit, got the carb out (the instructions say how to do it on the bike) and since my wife was out of town and I had 2 days before the gas smell had to leave the house, I did everything on the Kitchen table. not in a 110 degree garage. Carburetor was completely clogged so cleaned well first then followed simple instructions and used jets, needle and needle adjustment for my lift, 3x3 mod and stock exhaust. As the instructions state, there is a SMALL O-ring that falls out when you remove the top cover. I don't know how you wouldn't lose/return it if you do it on a bike. (Also a small spring that you might lose) The instructions seem to show that the o-ring surrounds one of the head screws, but it goes in a small indentation next to the screw. Put everything together and then cut open the airbox. I've seen all sorts of suggestions on how to do this, but I made a note of where to cut, SHORTLY heated one side at a time with a microtorch, and just snipped it off with a razor. Literally cuts like warm butter, took 2 minutes and no mess. The bike runs great now, has quicker response and a little more power. Whether it was just a clean carburetor, who knows, I don't care, that's where my problems are solved. (You also have to remove the plug to get to the set screw. I also bought an extended screw off eBay so it can be readjusted after assembly. I installed it following the instructions, after that I still didn't have to fiddle with it)
