I bought this to convert my old VHS tapes to digital files. Several VHS tapes that have worked with this unit have worked great. But only some of them. Apparently the device tries too hard to recognize the case where someone might try to digitize a store-bought VHS film (as if anyone would do it today!). As a result, on many of my tapes it would arbitrarily stop recording or even refuse to start with a blinking light, which presumably means it thinks the video is invalid. If he just recorded instead of trying to be so smart, that would be awesome. As a result, you need to sit and watch the device to make sure it isn't jamming. The few tapes that worked were great - the audio and video were in good sync and the video quality was fine. As others have pointed out: - Since there is no user interface, it's often hard to see WHY it's not working. - If the device turns off, your settings will be lost and will need to be re-entered, but it only takes a minute. - If you want to VIEW the recorded video, you need to connect an HDMI monitor or TV. (HDMI output is the only option.) This set top box was a great idea - a set top box that does it all, you just plug it in and it records. Unfortunately, this should be more lenient as VHS tapes are now obsolete and imperfect. It just didn't work for me.
