Not good for my cats. I didn't want the kids and my dog to go upstairs. Unfortunately my cats can't get through the bars. So if you want to keep cats away from bars, that's fine. But my goal was to keep the dog away from the cats. I wanted the cats to have access to the house. And of course it's great to protect children from climbing stairs. What I like is the durability. The gate will close if you give it a light push. Looks great! Don't screw it up and don't follow the installment instructions. I say save time and frustration. Follow the instructions! I recommend it. But my cat sits on the steps and scratches them with his paws (like doors) and we go and open the gate for him to come down.
