Review on 🐶 Small Breed Dry Dog Food by Whole Earth Farms by Reshelle Smeenge

My Yorkie was diagnosed with CHF last week. One of the first questions the vet asked was if he was on a grain free diet. For many years they ate Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein dog food due to allergies. Around early 2019, I decided to try some of the newer grain-free diets, and they all seemed to do well with Whole Earth Farms grain-free salmon and whitefish cuts. In May 2019, our vet performed a CT scan on one of them. He was on medication and for the last few months we have struggled with his breathing and lying down. He was taken to the vet last weekend he was panting heavily and pacing. After an X-ray, blood test and physical, he was diagnosed with severe heart failure, pneumonia and a never-before-seen heart murmur. We were sent home on Lasix, antibiotics and enalapril with instructions if he got worse over the weekend to take him straight to the emergency vet clinic with a cardiologist on staff and return Monday morning for observation including x-rays. After 2 days of medication he was significantly better and we returned for a follow-up on Monday. An X-ray on Monday showed a very large defect in the right atrium of his heart, which was not seen on Saturday because his right lung was filled with fluid. Since all of his problems came out of nowhere, I was asked if I went grain-free and we discussed a connection to what was recently discussed in the FDA report. We have an appointment with a cardiologist in September and I plan to discuss it at that time. All of this worries me a lot and frustrates me because he was always healthy before. So far, treatment for his heart failure has cost more than $600, and a visit to a cardiologist and exam is estimated at around $900. I was told that he would have to take medication for the rest of his life.
