Bulky, not optimal vertical fit

Is it so? Yes Does the hard drive slide left to right and back and forth? Yes, but the vertical size is too large, so the hard drive can move if the case is not oriented as shown. The stretch mesh helps, but basically there's a whole extra half of the clamshell, so that's too big too.
