The only reason I bought this caliper instead of others cheaper is because a guy left a review on here saying the markings were engraved. I assumed he meant that they were physically etched into the steel, not just laser etched. nope They're laser engraved like every other caliper, so I don't know why he even said that. Thinking about it again, I think the marks are probably too small to engrave. In any case, it's beautiful! So true. The small vernier scales are dead. The locking screw works well. Jaws close very shallow. Internal and external measurements are accurate. It doesn't slide as smoothly as my digital caliper, but my digital is better. I've seen cargo port digital calipers slip much worse than this one. For the price it's ok. I might take it apart and see if there's anything I can do to make it smoother. I actually took it apart and tried polishing the inside of the sliding part but it didn't make much of a difference. I didn't spend much time on it though, basically I just wanted to clean it up and make sure there weren't any rough spots inside. One thing I didn't like was that the edges of the steel were sharp. I'm sure any caliper in this price range will feel the same. While taking it apart I used a dremel on all edges except the inside of the jaws. I used these round pieces of sandpaper that fit on a small mandrel and it worked really well. Feels a lot better. You could probably do it by hand if you wrapped sandpaper around a butter knife or something. For $17 it's great. I always see people complaining about fake wheels on these calipers, but I really like it. My digital devices have a real wheel, and it has one downside: when you slide your thumb across the wheel, it only moves a short distance because the wheel is actually spinning. But it allows me to grab the wrong wheel with my thumb and pull it back even quicker. So basically I can open and close them more and faster. Now I can put away my digital caliper when I really don't need thousandths of an inch accuracy. Now I will use vernier. But I will tell you that with a vernier scale I can measure to within 2-5 hundredths of a millimeter and check with a number. It takes a little practice, but I can do it. Inches are harder to calculate, you have to do the math. Fit. Also, with this cheap vernier scale, I can scribble measurements on wood and stuff and I don't feel bad about it. Pretty cool. Many Thanks.
