I use this mug every time I shave, first to wet my brush and then to lather it. I don't keep soap in it; Instead, I load a wet brush from a separate bowl with whatever soap I'm using, and then transfer the brush to this mug. I found this very handy for creating a great thick creamy lather as it has little grooves on the bottom to help draw air into the soap. It also retains heat quite well; I fill it with hot water to wet the brush and then put it in the sink, which is also filled with hot water. When I get out of the shower, the brush is soft and the ceramic mug heats up pretty well. I have often (though not every time) found that the foam is still warm on the third pass! I also like the grip on this thing. You can hold it in the palm of your hand by the comfortable handle or the bottom of the mug; in any case, it is convenient and easy. I'm always very careful with it, but I know from experience that it's very well built and sturdy. Although I've never dropped it per se, there was a time when I was on the verge of shaving and pulling all the necessary gadgets and items out of my closet. My wife slept on the bed, but leaned from one corner at the head end of the bed to the opposite corner at the foot end of the bed, leaving me a good place to put my shaving supplies while I selected my soap. Spring. My wife stirred in her sleep and kicked the cup right off the bed, I should add we have a VERY high bed, all the way down to the wooden floor. I panicked and grabbed my razors, soap and pretty mug; While one of my razors broke in two, the mug was perfectly fine! No chips, no scratches, no cracks anywhere! He survived a 3 foot fall onto a very hard wooden floor and sustained no damage. While I wouldn't advise testing its durability the way I did, I can tell you that it has very strong, high quality porcelain construction. I must also add that this item was smaller than I expected. At first I was a bit disappointed as I was expecting something gigantic. After using it for the past 6 months I found it to be the perfect size; easy to hold, doesn't take up too much closet space and small enough to pack for travel, which I often did. After all, this is a beautiful thing. It is a very deep, inky black ebony color. Its shape is attractive and at the same time very practical; It feels like it was made specifically for MY hand! The fit and finish are perfect, like all Edwin Jagger pieces. This is truly a piece that can last a lifetime and more. Recommended for anyone looking for a good shaving mug. There are cheaper ones on the market, but I doubt anything cheaper would have survived a fall out of my bed; So I think it was money well spent.
