Installation and Viewing Instructions

Here are some installation and viewing instructions. The block itself works fine. we'll see at the next heavy downpour. Just bean counting would be nice if there were instructions, but this is how I made it for the camper body. In my case it was a slim top. It sounds like a long time below, but it was only about 45 minutes for someone with a basic knowledge. To remove your old brake light, pry very slightly and pull out. If it were as old as mine, I could just use my hands. Most likely the plastic will be so brittle that the lantern will break in half. Also, the wire attached to the back of the board simply comes loose. You want this to be the case since you will be reusing the wire. Don't mess with that just yet. This is the easy part. Once removed, you must carefully remove the old sealant/adhesive. The easiest way I've found is to take a hair dryer and a sharp knife, heat it up and run the knife under the glue and slowly peel it off like an apple. Heat makes removal easier. There may be residue in some places and go back to that as best you can to remove it. Then be sure to wipe the surface as clean as possible as you will be gluing the new block to the surface. Having a lot of dirt or glue residue can cause the bond to be short-lived. Once you've done that, you'll need to crawl under the RV's body and get to the wiring. Be sure to disconnect the cable first. You most likely have a quick connect connector on the back of the camper body on the driver's side. The red/black wire goes to the brake light. Black and white should be your skylight if you have one. Inside the caravan shell, look up at the center of the rear right where you saw the hole above where the brake light wire was. You will see a small tuft/bulge under the ceiling. If it were like mine you might even see a flap and some sealant. Not sure if it came from the factory that way, but even if it didn't, it's the easiest way to tie. Either carefully cut the flap or carefully cut the area and cut off about a 3-4 inch piece in the headliner. . You see black and red wires. Pull down the wires from the top of the case that were connected to the light and pull them out. After that, return to the street and you'll likely see the black rubber grommet that surrounded the wire. Use pliers to remove this rubber sleeve. Now take the new flashlight, carefully take the end of the wire and slide it through the hole at the top. If it were like mine, there would be a large chunk of caulk on the left. Simply slide the wire through where you removed the previous rubber sleeve. Go in and stretch the wire, but not quite. You will notice that the new block has a long rubber sleeve around the wire. Go back and pull the wire until it reaches the rubber sleeve. Now you need to slide the rubber sleeve into the same hole. This takes some effort and may require pliers or a screwdriver. Once it drops down a bit you can go in and take most of the way. Go outside again and make sure you can see where he will land. Now put some caulk around the rubber sleeve and in the hole as best you can to prevent leakage. Also use adhesive sealant on the back of the lantern to secure it to the RV bodywork. Don't put too much in it or it will get flat all over and you'll have to clean it up. Install the light in the right position. Then enter the camper's body. You'll find that you have a lot more wire than you need, so cut it off and leave a few inches to work with, which you'll put back under the headliner. Cut about 1-2 inches off the old wire to ensure you have a good connection, then use wire strippers for both the new and old wire to remove the wire. Then connect with a splice, twist or electrical tape. I suggest a splice connector, don't twist or glue, use whatever you like. Look at the image to see the location of the headliner and wire splice area. Once you've done this, check the connection and make sure your brake lights come on. I suggest before you reassemble everything go back upstairs and make sure the light is aimed properly as it may have shifted. Then let it dry overnight and in the morning you can reinsert the wires into the headliner and tape or glue the headliner wing together.
