This ring brace appears to be made of fairly soft metal that deforms easily when struck with a hammer. The tapered metal rod seems too thick in diameter to dip into. completely to the outside. Therefore, when the ring is stretched, it only goes in halfway. This is a problem because without special tools it will be almost impossible to tap and disconnect from the outside. a matching taper on the inner metal rod so that when it is inserted / fully engaged into the outer part, the end on the other side sticks out far enough to be easily removed. I would definitely avoid doing this unless you have a vise to secure the ends and separate the two pieces.
