I've been doing strength training for over 25 years without any major injuries. I focus on form, give myself enough time to recover and pay attention to how and when I push my limits. This is my first set of knee pads and I find the 5mm thickness to be just right for a bit of knee discomfort. I didn't notice any help in the form of a "bounce" from the bottom of the squat and it has virtually no effect on my movements. This works for me because I don't need a lot of support and I want to be the one doing the work, not my gear. In terms of fit, they tend to slip a bit on me. I have to adjust them a few times per workout, but that doesn't matter given the benefits. They sit a little lower than I expected, but I think maybe the center of the sleeve should be the patellar tendon and not the patella like I assumed. I think it makes sense. I plan on continuing to wear them because I love the warm and compressive feel. I have a pair of Rehband 5mm elbow pads that I have had for 9 years and they are holding up well so I think this brand is worth the price.
