Review on Allway GT3 Graining Tool Set by Matthew Frandsen

Wood grain similar to old barn wood.

I bought this kit to add artificial grit to an existing laundry room molding. The existing white hollow core doors were embossed wood and I painted them like old barn wood, applying the wood grain color to the embossed surface last. You looked great. The existing molding was smooth painted wood and since the doors now looked like old wood I had to do something with the molding. These tools did a reasonable job, but they did not produce a smooth wood grain because the molding was curved and the tools had flat surfaces. Since I was just making problem wood; Fine detail wasn't required, so I used the curved wood grain tools to add grain to the character, and then filled in the character with a triangular tool made from a flexible material that I could bend to hold more teeth on the molding. Using different spacing on each side made the grain more realistic. I have included a photo of the door showing the embossed hollow door and molding. A molding was incorporated so painting was more difficult than if the material was not already in place. Flat panels are the easiest to sand and if the surface weren't against the wall I expect these tools could create the look of a very nice wood grain. It would be more difficult to create a furniture style wood grain pattern on a curved molding with these tools. For my project, these tools worked well. Clean these tools before the paint dries on them, otherwise they will be difficult to clean.
